We're led to think Leia is going to die in space.Let's distinguish between subverting expections and being subversive P.S I just thought in my head that in my version Kylo's lightsaber would get wrecked and he break Luke's in rage after the salt planet, then the final shot of the film would be Kylo turning on his new lightsaber but the beam wouldn't be janky and you'd have that musical sting and make it all menacing. He could even reveal that he was only using Rey and then cast her out if he wanted, setting him up as a true arsehole that would be a compelling villian in the next film! No, instead we must set up the expected storyline only to subvert it, because that makes it better, right? Why not have him launch the missiles at Leia, have him become more confident and competent in the film to make it more believable when he kills Snoke. Instead he goes against that despite having at least 1 clear part (you can debate what the kylo/rey scenes were meant to convey, if anything) that set that up. It was the obvious, most basic story line that would have been unoriginal and had to have been executed very well to not make you roll your eyes but people expected anyways. After he didn't blast Leia into oblivion I thought there was a shot at him turning. This reminds me of that Starbucks Christmas thing where a dozen crazy Christians complained about the cups losing the Christmas imagery, but then five million people kept talking about how everyone was freaking out about the cups and they thought they were totally owning them by buying them and drawing the devil on it or some shit.īefore the film people thought Kylo Ren was conflicted. Rey’s parents being nobody? That was tied into the films themes and Rey’s character arc with purpose. Snoke dying? I guess that’s the one but it works within the story to establish Kylos character arc and the theme of the film (Also Jay said he liked this bit). What is actually frivolously subversive about the movie? Luke being a hermit? This is established in TFA.

I also think the idea that the movie is subversive just for the sake of it or that it makes the narrative “fall on its face” is just. I feel like I’ve seen this used ten times more ironically by RLM/posters here to mock people who like The Last Jedi for being subversive in and of itself than I’ve seen anyone actually praising the movie solely for being subversive.
